Role Overview:
As Head of Year, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the educational journey of students within your designated year group. You will lead the development of a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment, ensuring that every student is empowered to achieve their best. This is a crucial role that combines pastoral leadership with an understanding of the academic challenges and needs of the students in your care.

You will be responsible for overseeing the academic progress, wellbeing, and personal development of students in your year group, working closely with parents, teachers, and other key staff members to ensure a holistic approach to student support. You will also act as a key figure in promoting the school's values, high expectations, and a culture of achievement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pastoral Leadership: Provide leadership and guidance to the year group, ensuring that students’ academic, social, and emotional needs are met. Foster a positive and inclusive year group culture.

  • Academic Monitoring: Monitor the academic progress of students in the year group, liaising with subject leaders and teaching staff to identify and support students who require intervention or additional support.

  • Student Wellbeing: Ensure the wellbeing of all students in the year group by addressing issues related to mental health, behaviour, attendance, and pastoral care. Provide support for students during challenging times and work closely with external agencies when necessary.

  • Behaviour Management: Implement and uphold the school’s behaviour policy, promoting positive behaviour, discipline, and respect. Manage challenging behaviour in a constructive and supportive manner.

  • Parental Engagement: Build strong relationships with parents and carers, ensuring that they are kept informed of their child’s progress and any pastoral issues that may arise. Hold regular meetings with parents to discuss their child’s development.

  • Year Group Events and Activities: Organise and lead year group events, including educational trips, enrichment activities, assemblies, and other initiatives designed to promote student engagement and personal development.

  • Collaboration with Staff: Work closely with form tutors, subject teachers, and senior leadership to ensure that the year group’s academic and pastoral needs are fully supported. Take an active role in the wider school community and contribute to whole-school initiatives.

  • Safeguarding: Act as a Designated Safeguarding Lead for the year group, ensuring that students are protected from harm, following safeguarding procedures, and reporting any concerns in line with school policies.

Person Specification:

  • Experience:
    • Proven experience of pastoral care and student support, preferably in a leadership or management role.
    • Experience of managing behaviour, supporting students with diverse needs, and driving student engagement and achievement.
    • Knowledge of educational policies and practices in secondary schools, particularly with regard to safeguarding, behaviour management, and academic progress
