A Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) is an individual who has completed their teacher training and obtained Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). All teachers who gained QTS from April 2003 onwards must complete a statutory induction period in Wales. The Welsh NQT program is specifically designed to align with Wales' unique curriculum priorities, including bilingual education and inclusive teaching practices.
Unlike England, where newly qualified teachers are called Early Career Teachers (ECTs) and follow a two-year induction program, Welsh NQTs complete their induction through 380 teaching sessions (equivalent to one year).
Our recruitment teams specialise in helping NQTs find suitable supply teaching positions to complete their induction requirements.
Completing Your NQT Induction Through Supply Teaching
You can complete your NQT induction through supply teaching work with Teaching Personnel. Each full teaching day that you work counts as 2 sessions (morning and afternoon). Important points to note:
- You must be registered with the Education Workforce Council (EWC) as a school teacher before starting.
- You must record all of your teaching sessions with the EWC
For comprehensive information about NQT induction requirements in Wales, please visit the Education Workforce Council induction documentation.
Working with Teaching Personnel during my NQT year and the years that followed was an absolutely fantastic experience. From the start, my consultant was incredible in ensuring I was placed in long-term roles within my subject area, enabling me to complete my NQT year seamlessly. They went above and beyond to ensure I felt supported every step of the way, not only by Teaching Personnel but also by the schools I worked in.
