Top Tips for Creating a Dynamic Lesson Plan for Teaching Geography

Date posted : 14 March 2022

Dynamic lesson planning is an absolute essential in modern education and, with the right methods, teachers can deliver an enriching experience in every class. Teaching was once a one-way process of information, with teachers dictating the class and the students having little to no interaction or input. However, this teaching style is now redundant, and today’s students require more motivation to learn.

Enter dynamic learning.

This adaptable teaching approach encourages critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity and allows students of all ages to participate in the learning process.

Dynamic lesson plans have worked wonders for subjects such as English and Mathematics and have also become a common approach for Geography. Geography teachers who adopt a student-centred approach to teaching increase opportunities for student engagement, which helps everyone achieve the learning objectives.

Whether you are an established secondary school geography teacher, an NQT or a teacher’s assistant, you will find these top three geography teacher tips to be useful when creating your next dynamic lesson plan.

1. Introduce Digital Geography Resources

The term Digital Learning Resources (DLRs) refers to digital teaching assets such as applications, software, programs, or websites that engage pupils and support their learning goals. These digital resources can be extremely useful for putting together your geography teacher lesson plan. Online tools will modernise your geography lesson and turn the classroom into a more exciting, stimulating learning environment.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Geocaching: Take your students on a geocaching adventure and encourage them to explore terrains while you teach them about modern navigation using GPS.
  • Google Maps: Prompt your students to research and explore an area using Google Maps or Google Earth.
  • Earth Alerts: This brilliant website allows you to track major global events in real-time, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, hurricanes, and tsunamis!

2. Create Multiple Learning Activities Per Objective

Include multiple learning activities for each objective in your lesson plan to maximise each pupil’s learning potential. These activities don’t need to be complex or time-consuming, but they do to need differ, even if just slightly, in their approach. This way, students with varied learning abilities can approach the lesson from different perspectives whilst still reaching the same conclusion.

For example, one activity can be reading-based while another can be game-based. Many learners, especially secondary school students, enjoy online games and it is a form of learning that they interact with best. As a geography teacher, you may be thrilled to discover the likes of GeoGuessr (a discovery geography game) and Geography Duel (a world geography trivia game).

Gaming can create a dynamic that inspires students to acquire skills and competencies as they focus on the strategy of the game

3. Allocate Time for Questions

The power of posing a question can never be understated. Allocating time specifically for ironing out any queries is a key part of any lesson. One question from a student has the potential to ignite thought processes in the rest of the class, and that’s an essential cog of a good geography lesson!

Towards the end of your lesson plan, set aside time for a Q&A session. Allow your learners to ask questions and then provide other learners with an opportunity to respond with what they think is the correct answer. As this session draws to a close, use your students’ thought processes to conclude with the main objective, providing them with the correct answers.

This type of interactive learning intrigues learners as they pay attention to how their fellow students respond.
