Welsh government calls for musical instrument donations for schools
A pilot scheme is being launched by the Welsh government that will encourage people across the country to donate old, unused musical instruments for use in schools.
The Instruments for Kids project will ask people to hand over any instruments they are no longer playing for redistribution by local authorities to children and schools where there is a need for music provision. This will take place from November 20th to 24th during Music Instrument Amnesty Week.
It follows a campaign earlier this year that saw more than 50 instruments donated by ministers and staff from the Welsh Government and National Assembly for Wales, with the Instruments for Kids pilot launched with a special performance by the Novello Orchestra at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama using instruments donated through the earlier scheme.
The government is initiating this effort as part of a broader push to provide greater access to musical education among the nation's schoolchildren, recognising the significant educational benefits and life enrichment that learning to play a musical instrument can provide.
Education secretary Kirsty Williams said: "We believe that every child should have the opportunity to learn an instrument. That is why, together, we are making a commitment to finding new and innovative ways of making sure children across Wales get access to music; Instrument for Kids is part of this."
The Welsh government previously allocated an additional £220,000 in funding earlier this year to help local authority music services purchase instruments that can be shared across Wales and targeted at areas in greatest need, with every council in Wales receiving an extra £10,000 for this purpose.
These efforts to increase opportunities for musical learning inside and outside the classroom reflect a view that music is an ideal medium for self-expression and personal development.
