Catch-Up Survey Results: Why are schools holding back from starting catch-up?
The Teaching Personnel Catch-Up Survey
We asked schools leaders about their plans for providing catch-up tuition for their pupils. The response indicated that catch-up tuition was something most schools were planning to do. However, there remained some uncertainty among school leaders about making the most of the available funding.
When asked if their pupils will get access to catch-up tuition this academic year, 85% of respondents said yes, with only 3% ruling out the chance altogether. 91% of respondents also were aware of the Catch-Up Premium funding paid to all schools across the year.
Despite this, only 59% of the school who responded were currently providing catch-up tuition for their pupils.
Why the disparity? Two possible reasons we highlighted later in the survey. 61% of respondents indicated that they either would require additional tuition staff to deliver tuition or were unsure if they had suitable staff available. And with 90% of schools planning to deliver a mix of one-to-one and small group tuition the school day (75%), the need for extra staffing to deliver tuition becomes clear.
Alongside the Catch-Up Premium, the National Tutoring Programme (NTP) provides schools with the opportunity to access subsidised tuition programmes. When asked if they plan to take advantage of subsidised tutoring through the NTP 40% answered positively. With 33% either unsure if they would take advantage of the NTP or unaware of it all together, more work is required to promote the benefits of this programme.
Overall, schools are convinced of the positive role value catch-up tuition could play for their pupils, but there remains uncertainty around how best to deliver it. As pupils begin to return to the class in March the need for extra help to mitigate learning loss will be even more pressing. As an NTP Tuition Partner and one of the leading providers of catch-up tuition in the country, Teaching Personnel is ideally placed to help your school deliver a comprehensive range of tuition and other catch-up activity.
