Job description

SEN Support Assistant to work in a Primary School – Old Trafford, Manchester

We are seeking a SEN Support Assistant to work full time in a Primary School in Old Trafford, supporting a Year 2 Pupil who is non-verbal and does has complex needs. 

Working as a Special Educational Needs (SEN) support assistant for a Year 2 pupil with complex needs is both a challenging and rewarding role. Here are some key aspects to consider before applying for the position:

1. Understanding  Children with Complex Needs

Pupils with complex needs often have significant learning needs. Your role will include:

  • Supporting the child with communication and interaction.
  • Assisting with personal care, whilst promoting independence (toileting, dressing.)
  • Working with other professionals (speech therapists, occupational therapists) to implement tailored education and care plans.

2. Creating an Inclusive Learning Environment

  • Modify lessons and activities to suit the pupil’s abilities with support of the class teacher and SENCO.
  • Use sensory materials and multi-sensory approaches to engage the child.
  • Ensure accessibility by adapting classroom spaces and resources.

3. Collaboration with Teachers and Parents

  • Work closely with the class teacher to adapt lessons.
  • Regular communication with parents to track progress.
  • Attend team meetings with various professionals to discuss the child’s development.

4. Emotional and Behavioural Support

  • Help the pupil with emotional regulation.
  • Use positive reinforcement and patience to manage challenging behaviours.
  • Develop trusting relationships for effective support.

5. Training and Development

  • Be open to ongoing professional development, such as attending SEN and safeguarding training.
  • Learn to use specialized equipment (hoists, communication aids).

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
