Job description

1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant (Secondary)

Location: Tameside
Contract Type: Full-time (Monday to Friday, term-time only)
Start Date: Immediate
Pay: £89 – £95 per day (dependent on experience and qualifications)

A vibrant and inclusive secondary school in Tameside is seeking a compassionate 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant to support a Year 8 student with autism spectrum condition (ASC) and sensory processing difficulties. This is a vital role in ensuring the student has the support they need to engage in lessons, build social skills, and thrive within the school community.

You will work directly with the student throughout the day, providing tailored support in all areas of their school life, including academic learning, social interactions, and emotional regulation. Your role will involve working closely with teachers, the SENCO, and external professionals to adapt the curriculum and ensure the student’s educational needs are met. Additionally, you’ll be part of the school’s wider SEND team, contributing to a positive, inclusive learning environment for all students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 support to the student throughout the school day, helping them access lessons and the wider curriculum

  • Promote independence by encouraging self-regulation and positive social interactions with peers

  • Adapt lesson materials as required to meet the student’s individual needs

  • Help with behaviour management, implementing strategies as outlined in the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP)

  • Liaise regularly with the SENCO and class teachers to track progress and review strategies

  • Support in implementing social skills programmes and any therapeutic interventions when necessary

  • Assist the student with transitions, breaks, and lunchtime support to help them stay engaged

School Culture & Benefits:

  • The school is inclusive and welcoming, with a strong commitment to meeting the needs of all students

  • The school offers a comprehensive induction process, including ongoing training in SEN and behaviour management

  • You will be supported by a well-established SEN team, with access to resources and regular CPD (Continuing Professional Development)

  • Positive behaviour policies that focus on support rather than sanctions

  • Opportunities for career progression, including access to further training in special educational needs and teaching

Ideal Candidate:

  • Experience working with students with special educational needs, particularly those with ASC or sensory processing difficulties

  • A calm and patient approach, with the ability to manage challenging behaviour effectively

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, able to work with students, parents, and professionals

  • A passion for helping students overcome barriers to learning and social inclusion

  • SEN qualifications (e.g. Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent) are desirable, but not essential
