How to write an eye-catching tutor CV

Date posted : 06 October 2022

A recent review by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that tutoring is largely responsible for improving various outcomes across all grades. This paper is just one of several resources that supports this stance. With so much significance placed on tutors, it makes sense why many individuals are now considering this type of educational role.

The UK’s National Tutoring Programme has also made tutoring a more inviting career choice. This is because the support and subsidised tuition has created several exciting opportunities in the field. This is excellent news if you want to apply for tutor jobs.

But if you want your tutor CV to stand out from the rest so that you can land your dream role, you might want to consider the following tips:

1. Tailor your CV to the job

Tweaking your CV to complement each role can be tedious. However, it may be well worth your while if there’s a tuition job you really want.

Start by researching the employer and pay close attention to the job requirements so that you can accentuate your tutoring skills that fit the criteria. Your research will also help you to conceptualise keywords that the employer will be looking out for, thus scooting your application to the top of the pile.

For example, if you’re applying for an online tuition role, focus on qualities that highlight your ability to tutor online effectively.

2. Keep it short and sweet

Long, drawn-out CVs can be a burden to recruiters who must read through several applications. By keeping your CV layout short and neat, you improve your chances of catching the reader’s attention.

This doesn’t mean you must leave out important information. Use headings, sub-headings, and bulleted points to summarise your skills, experience, qualifications, and potential.

3. Make sure your CV highlights your value

We know that the role of tutors in education is invaluable. Grab the attention of recruiters by highlighting your ability to live up to the expectations of the job. Use your cover letter or the introduction of your CV to emphasise your value.

For example, you can share your thoughts on how you plan to maintain the important status tuition currently has in the UK and globally. Educational recruiters are always looking for candidates who are eager to support and uplift the industry.

4. Associate your students' academic achievements with your success

*This last tip applies to those who have tutoring experience. If you are applying for your first tuition role, then keep the information in mind for the future.

By connecting your career success to your students’ success, you prove to recruiters that you value your students and that you’re proud of their achievements. Most schools are looking for student-focused tutors who are serious about the impact they can have on learning.

For emphasis, you can provide examples of how you mentored your students and how you helped them reach or surpass goals. Include measurable improvements if you can, such as test scores.
