Job description

Teaching Assistant (Pupil Referral Unit)

Are you ready to make a difference in young people’s lives?

Teaching Personnel is seeking a Teaching Assistant (TA) to support students in one of our partner schools in Salford—a small Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) for students aged 11-16 with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a passion for education and a desire to help students overcome barriers to learning.

The School:

Our partner PRU is dedicated to supporting students who experience a range of challenges, including low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. With reduced class sizes and a close-knit, supportive staff team, the school provides a nurturing environment where students can re-engage with education and make real progress, both academically and emotionally.

The Role:

As a Teaching Assistant in this specialist setting, you will play a key role in supporting students to manage their emotions, improve their self-confidence, and achieve their academic potential. You will work alongside teachers to help create a calm and structured environment in which students can learn and thrive. Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting students in the classroom with their academic work, on a one-to-one or small group basis
  • Building positive relationships with students to encourage their re-engagement with learning
  • Assisting teachers with lesson delivery, tailoring support to meet individual learning needs
  • Promoting positive behaviour and helping students to develop social skills
  • Working with students to manage their emotional and mental health challenges

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experience working with young people, particularly those with SEMH needs (experience in a PRU or similar setting is highly desirable)
  • A caring, patient, and resilient attitude
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to build trust and motivate students who may be reluctant to engage with education
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the well-being of vulnerable learners

Why Work with Teaching Personnel?

  • Competitive pay, paid weekly through PAYE
  • Opportunities for professional development and career progression
  • Ongoing support and guidance from our experienced team
  • The chance to make a real difference in students’ lives in a rewarding and fulfilling role

How to Apply:
If you have the skills and passion to support young people with SEMH needs, we’d love to hear from you. Please send your CV and a member of the team will be in touch to discuss the role in more detail.
