Job Advertisement: SEMH Teaching Assistant

Teaching Personnel is seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join an Ofsted-rated "Good" secondary school in Levenshulme as a Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) Teaching Assistant. This is a full-time position starting in March and continuing until the end of the academic year, with the potential for a permanent role depending on performance.

About the Role:
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will provide critical support to students who face challenges related to their social, emotional, and mental health. This role requires empathy, resilience, and a proactive approach to fostering positive relationships and promoting a nurturing learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support to students with SEMH needs, helping them engage in learning activities and develop coping strategies.
  • Work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to implement personalized support plans and behavioral strategies.
  • Assist in de-escalating challenging situations, maintaining a calm and positive atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Support the development of students’ social skills, self-esteem, and emotional regulation.
  • Monitor and record students’ progress, providing regular feedback to staff and parents as needed.
  • Help create and maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
  • Contribute to the wider school community by participating in staff meetings, training sessions, and extracurricular activities.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience working with children or young people, particularly those with SEMH needs.
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build positive and trusting relationships with students and staff.
  • Be empathetic, patient, and resilient in managing challenging behaviors.
  • Have strong organizational skills and the ability to adapt to the dynamic nature of the role.
  • Be committed to promoting the well-being and success of all students.
  • Hold relevant qualifications or training in education, mental health, or behavior management (desirable but not essential).

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
