Job description

Autism Support Assistant – SEN Secondary School (Bolton)
Location: Bolton BL2
Salary: Competitive (£90+ per day)
Contract: Full-time, Term-time only
Start Date: ASAP (following registration)

We’re on the hunt for an Autism Support Assistant to join a fantastic specialist secondary school in Bolton. This is a school that truly gets what support means for students with complex needs. You’ll be stepping into a vibrant, warm, and highly supportive environment where every day is different and every student is unique.

What kind of students will I support?

You'll be working closely with students aged 11–16 who may have:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – which can impact how students communicate, interact socially, and process the world around them.

  • Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) – meaning some students need extra time and support with things like reading, writing, speaking, or daily routines.

  • Other additional needs – this might include speech and language difficulties, sensory processing challenges, anxiety, or behaviours that communicate unmet needs.

These young people are brilliant, full of potential, and just need the right support to shine — that’s where you come in.

What will I be doing?

This isn’t a sit-at-the-desk type of job. Here’s a snapshot of your day:

  • Supporting students 1:1 or in small groups, helping them stay engaged and feel safe in their learning environment.

  • Using strategies like visual aids, structured routines, sensory regulation, and positive behaviour support to help students succeed.

  • Encouraging communication and confidence — whether that’s helping a student learn a new word, develop friendships, or simply feel heard and understood.

  • Working closely with teachers, therapists, and other TAs to deliver tailored learning and care plans.

  • Helping students learn essential life skills, build independence, and enjoy their school day.

Who is this role perfect for?

This could be an amazing fit if you:

  • Have experience supporting children or young people in any capacity — whether that’s through work, volunteering, or personal experience.

  • Are a psychology graduate, youth worker, carer, or just someone with the heart and patience to make a difference.

  • Have a calm, nurturing and proactive approach — SEN support requires flexibility and emotional intelligence.

  • Are passionate about inclusion, equality, and seeing students for who they are — not just their diagnosis.

What can you expect from us?

  • A friendly and welcoming school with a strong sense of community.

  • Access to training and development, including Autism-specific support strategies and safeguarding.

  • Specialist facilities designed to meet the sensory and learning needs of students.

  • A dedicated consultant from Teaching Personnel who will manage your placement, check in regularly, and help you develop in your role.

Whether you’re looking to build a long-term career in education, psychology, therapy or social care — or you simply want a role that’s meaningful, active, and full of purpose — this is a fantastic place to start.
