Director of Learning – English
Location: Ofsted Outstanding Academy, Bradford
Salary: MPS/UPS + TLR 1 (£9,782 per annum)
Contract: Permanent, Full-time
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an outstanding and experienced educator to join an Ofsted-rated Outstanding Academy in Bradford, which is part of a highly successful and growing Multi-Academy Trust. The academy is seeking a Director of Learning – English, a leadership role that will allow you to drive the strategic vision for the department, inspire both staff and students, and have a lasting impact on educational outcomes.
This is a pivotal position where you will have the chance to lead a dynamic and passionate English department, ensure the delivery of a first-class curriculum, and enhance the overall educational experience for all students. As Director of Learning, you will be at the forefront of shaping and developing the curriculum, driving high standards in teaching and learning, and fostering a culture of excellence within the department.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership of the English Curriculum: Take ownership of the strategic planning, development, and delivery of the English curriculum across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5. Ensure that the curriculum is rigorous, inclusive, and meets the diverse needs of all students.
- Staff Leadership and Development: Lead, mentor, and support the English department staff, ensuring that best practices are shared, professional growth is encouraged, and high standards are maintained. You will lead by example, providing inspiration and guidance to foster professional development.
- Student Outcomes: Monitor and evaluate student performance and progress, implementing strategies for continuous improvement. Collaborate with other senior leaders to ensure that student outcomes in English remain consistently outstanding.
- Quality Assurance: Develop and maintain robust systems for assessment, monitoring, and reporting, ensuring that the department meets all performance targets and delivers excellent results.
- Collaboration and School Development: Work closely with other departments and senior leadership to contribute to the overall academic strategy and improvement plans of the school. Engage in cross-curricular projects and initiatives that promote the school’s ethos and vision.
- Parental Engagement: Maintain strong communication with parents, keeping them informed of student progress, and working with them to ensure the best possible educational outcomes for all pupils.
The Ideal Candidate:
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and experienced leader with a passion for English education. You will have proven leadership experience and a track record of driving educational improvement within the subject area. The ideal candidate will have a clear vision for the development of English education and the ability to implement this vision effectively within a high-performing school environment.

- A deep knowledge of the English curriculum and pedagogy across Key Stages 3-5.
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate colleagues and students alike.
- A data-driven approach to monitoring student progress and implementing targeted interventions to ensure success.
- A strong commitment to maintaining a student-centred approach to teaching and learning.
- The ability to manage and prioritise multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Experience of leading a team and fostering a culture of high expectations and continuous professional development.
