The School

An specialist setting in York, catering for pupils aged 11-19. Students can have a primary diagnosis of Autism, alongside other complex needs. Most pupils have significant SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs and may display challenging behaviour. The school prides itself on offering a supportive and tailored environment for its students.

The Role

This is a full-time teaching assistant position where you will work closely with a team to provide excellent care and education to young people. You will be instrumental in supporting the class teacher and students, assisting with behavioural management and supporting students' mental health needs.

Main Responsibilities

  • Work under the guidance of the class teacher to support lesson delivery
  • Provide support to students during lessons and throughout the school day
  • Lead small group interventions to support academic and emotional development
  • Provide one-to-one support to students as directed by the class teacher
  • Help to maintain a positive and productive classroom environment
  • Support students with their social and emotional development, promoting positive behaviour
  • Assist in implementing individual education plans (IEPs) and monitoring progress

Essential Criteria/Skills

  • Very good level of spoken and written English
  • Strong behaviour management skills
  • High levels of resilience and patience
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and in challenging situations
  • Empathy and understanding of the needs of students with Autism and SEMH needs

Desirable Criteria

  • Previous experience supporting students with SEMH needs
  • Previous experience working with secondary-age students (11-19)
  • Experience with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an advantage
  • Team Teach or other behaviour management training is desirable
