SEMH Support Workers – Huddersfield & Surrounding Areas
Are you experienced in working with young people with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? Do you want a flexible role where you can provide vital support while gaining experience across different schools in Huddersfield and nearby areas?
Teaching Personnel is looking for SEMH Support Workers to work in a variety of school settings, including primary, secondary, and post-16 provisions. Many of the students you will support face complex challenges, such as behavioural difficulties, exclusions, trauma, or additional learning needs. A high number have Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs) and require targeted intervention to thrive in an educational setting.

The Role – How You’ll Make a Difference
As an SEMH Support Worker, you’ll play an essential role in promoting positive behaviour and emotional well-being. You’ll work closely with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and SENCOs to provide structured support, either one-to-one or in small groups.
Your Key Responsibilities Will Include:
✔ Implementing tailored behaviour strategies to support individual pupils.
✔ Assisting students in managing emotions, reducing anxiety, and building resilience.
✔ Delivering focused intervention sessions on self-regulation, confidence, and coping skills.
✔ Supporting students with re-integration following exclusions or extended absences.

✔ Working with teachers to adapt and deliver personalised learning plans.

What We’re Looking For
We are particularly interested in candidates with first-hand experience working with children and young people with SEMH needs. The ideal candidate will be patient, adaptable, and confident in managing challenging behaviour.
Desirable Training & Qualifications:
- Team Teach, MAPA, or other de-escalation training (highly desirable).
- Mental Health First Aid or trauma-informed practice training.
- Experience with restorative justice or behaviour mentoring.
Essential Requirements:

✔ Ability to build strong relationships and create a positive learning environment.
✔ A calm and resilient approach to supporting students.
✔ Own transport is advantageous but not essential.

About the Role:
As a Behaviour Support Worker, you’ll play a key role in fostering a safe and structured learning environment. You’ll work closely with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and SENCOs to provide tailored support for pupils, either one-to-one or in small groups.
Your responsibilities will include:

Delivering targeted intervention sessions on topics such as mental health, self-esteem, anger management, and resilience.

Assisting with reintegration into school after exclusions or extended absences, improving attendance and punctuality.
