Job description

We are currently working with the Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC) to help provide support staff to assist with their campaign to create 1 million Welsh speakers by 2026. It really is a fantastic scheme to be part of as it is an opportunity which contributes to our generations which follow and keep the Welsh language alive.

This would involve delivering an alternative curriculum to immerse children from all over the world in the language of Welsh. The aim is to fast track their understanding of the language in both written and verbal communication so they are caught up to peers within the school. They will then integrate into the usual timetable and work alongside their peers, being educated through the medium of Welsh. There will be 6 weekly reviews to establish the progress of the children to assess if they are ready to integrate into their peers classroom. You will be supported with a direct line manager as well as Teaching Assistants in the classroom to engage with those who require additional support.

Experience is essential in this role as you will be required to be innovative, understanding and patient with the children which in some cases might have trouble communicating verbally in a language they are comfortable with for some time. Using other methods of communication and pushing them to their full potential will require confidence and enthusiasm to engage the children throughout.

Essential criteria:

  • Must be able to Teach in the medium of Welsh
  • Have gained Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in the UK; or equivalent
  • Can confidently plan and delegate a daily routine for support staff within the classroom;
  • Able to commit to a long term position Teaching a full timetable with the relevant time set aside for Planning, Preparation and Assessment (PPA).
  • Registered with the education workforce council (EWC) or willing to register
