Job description

Learning Support Assistants required for secondary schools in Portsmouth

Are you dedicated to helping students succeed and eager to support their personal and academic development? A secondary school in Portsmouth is seeking a compassionate and committed Learning Support Assistant to join their team. This role offers a meaningful opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young learners.

About the School

This secondary school in Portsmouth, currently on an ambitious path of improvement, has been recognised by Ofsted for its strong leadership and clear direction. The senior leadership team, in close collaboration with trust leaders, is focused on providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment. Leaders have been proactive in identifying areas for growth, particularly in supporting students with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and improving student behaviour.

The school has been praised for its robust safeguarding practices. Staff are well-trained in safeguarding, and processes are in place to support vulnerable students through close partnerships with external agencies. Recent enhancements in behaviour policies and pastoral support aim to create a positive school atmosphere where all students feel supported and ready to learn. Trust-wide leaders are working daily with the school to ensure that students with SEND, particularly those in younger years, receive early, tailored support to thrive in their education.

Role and Responsibilities

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will provide essential support to students across Key Stages 3 and 4, helping them achieve their personal and academic goals. Your responsibilities will include:

  • In-Class Support: Assist students during lessons, helping them understand and engage with the material, and providing individual support as needed.
  • Supporting Students with SEND: Work closely with the SENCo and teaching staff to support students with special educational needs, particularly those in Years 7 and 8 who may need additional help to settle and succeed in school.
  • Encouraging Positive Behaviour: Help reinforce the school’s behaviour policy by promoting respectful and focused behaviour, contributing to a positive learning environment.
  • One-on-One and Small Group Interventions: Provide targeted support for students needing extra help, particularly with literacy, numeracy, and social skills.
  • Building Relationships: Develop supportive, trusting relationships with students, enabling them to feel comfortable and confident in their learning environment.
  • Collaborative Support: Work alongside teachers, pastoral staff, and external professionals to create comprehensive support plans for students with specific needs.

Qualifications and Requirements

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • Previous Experience working with children or young adults in an educational or support setting, ideally within a secondary school.
  • A passion for helping students succeed and a patient, supportive approach to working with young people.
  • An understanding of, or willingness to learn about, special educational needs and behavioural strategies.
  • Strong Communication Skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • Flexibility, teamwork, and a commitment to contributing to the school’s improvement journey.
