We are currently working with one of our partner school who are a leading provider of specialist independent education, residential care, and therapeutic services for young people aged 8-18 who have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) for Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), or related conditions. The schools aim is to provide support for these young people to achieve their full potential and thrive both academically and personally.
Role Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Engagement Instructor to join our team. This post involves working offsite with pupils, often in alternative provision settings, where you will support the delivery of vocational and academic courses. You will be part of a specialist independent school providing education and therapeutic care to young people with a range of complex needs.
This is a challenging yet highly rewarding role. You will be required to work in environments that can be demanding, often requiring you to support students through stressful interpersonal situations. It is essential that you maintain a high degree of professionalism, patience, and empathy at all times.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide support to students with SEN, including SEMH, ASD, and related conditions, in a variety of off site educational settings.
- Assist in delivering both vocational and academic courses tailored to the individual needs of students.
- Build positive relationships with students, particularly those who may present challenging behaviour, to create a safe and productive learning environment.
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff, therapists, and residential care teams to ensure a holistic approach to supporting each student.
- Help students with their personal development, including supporting their social skills and emotional well-being.
- Monitor and track student's progress, providing feedback to the teaching team and other professionals involved in the care and education of the students.
- Foster a supportive, inclusive atmosphere where students feel valued and motivated to engage in their learning.
- Assist with the management of challenging situations, using de-escalation strategies and promoting positive behavioural interventions.
- Act as a positive role model for students, upholding high standards of behaviour and academic work.
Requirements:
To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate the following:
- Experience of working with children and young people – ideally with those who have special educational needs, including SEMH, ASD, or related conditions.
- Understanding of SEN – knowledge of the challenges faced by students with SEND and the strategies used to support them.
- Ability to build relationships quickly with challenging pupils – a key part of the role involves establishing trust and rapport with students who may have complex emotional and behavioural needs.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently – you will need to manage your own time effectively, often working with minimal supervision.
- Awareness of the mental health needs of children and young people – you should have an understanding of how mental health challenges can impact a young person’s learning and behaviour.
Desirable:
- A relevant qualification in education, health, or social care (such as a Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant qualification).
- Experience working in alternative provision or specialist education settings.
- Training in de-escalation techniques or mental health first aid (or willingness to undertake this training).

- Empathy and understanding of the needs of young people with SEND.
- A proactive and positive attitude towards overcoming challenges.
- Professionalism and discretion when dealing with sensitive issues.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
