Deputy Head of English – Permanent Position
Location: Southampton, Hampshire
Start Date: September 2025
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

A highly reputable and large Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Deputy Head of English to join its dedicated team. The successful candidate will be a passionate leader with a proven track record in raising standards and driving excellence in English education across all key stages. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional to make a significant impact within a supportive and ambitious educational environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Head of English in leading and managing the English department to deliver outstanding teaching and learning.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve student outcomes and maintain high academic standards across all Key Stages.
  • Lead by example in promoting a culture of high expectations, resilience, and academic achievement.
  • Monitor and assess the quality of teaching and learning within the department, providing guidance and support to staff where necessary.
  • Contribute to the development of departmental policies and schemes of work, ensuring alignment with national curriculum requirements and MAT priorities.
  • Line manage English teachers and provide mentoring and professional development to support career progression.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to implement whole-school initiatives and contribute to the school’s overall vision for academic excellence.
  • Engage with parents and carers to ensure they are well-informed of their child’s progress and the department's work.

Requirements:

  • A proven track record of successful teaching and leadership within an English department.
  • Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to inspire and motivate staff.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • A thorough understanding of the national curriculum, assessment frameworks, and current educational developments.
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluating teaching practices to ensure the highest quality of education.
  • A commitment to continuing professional development and a passion for fostering the success of others.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a wider leadership team.
  • Hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and have significant teaching experience in secondary education.

Desirable:

  • Experience in leading or contributing to curriculum development at a whole-school or departmental level.
  • An interest or background in innovative teaching practices and educational research.
  • A strong understanding of data analysis and the ability to use data to inform decision-making.
