English Graduate Teaching Assistant – Full-Time Role in Barnsley

 

Teaching Personnel is seeking an English Graduate Teaching Assistant to join an Ofsted-rated ‘Good’ secondary school in Barnsley. This is a full-time position starting immediately and continuing until the end of the academic year, with the potential for a permanent role based on performance.

 

Role Overview

This role is ideal for a recent English graduate who is passionate about literature, language, and education. It provides a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable experience working in a school environment, particularly for those considering a career in teaching, tutoring, or educational support. The successful candidate will work closely with students across Key Stages 3 and 4, supporting their learning in English Language and Literature. You will help students develop their reading, writing, and analytical skills, boosting their confidence and engagement in the subject.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing one-to-one and small group support for students who require additional help with English.
  • Assisting teachers in delivering engaging and accessible English lessons to students of varying abilities. 
  • Supporting students in developing reading comprehension, essay writing, and analytical skills.
  • Helping students with GCSE preparation, including exam techniques and coursework support.
  • Encouraging students to develop a passion for literature and effective communication skills.
  • Supporting students with special educational needs (SEN) who require tailored learning strategies.
  • Assisting with lesson planning, resource creation, and classroom activities.
  • Monitoring student progress and providing feedback to teachers to help adapt lesson plans effectively.
  • Helping with classroom behaviour management to ensure a focused and supportive learning environment.

 

Candidate Requirements:

  • A degree in English, English Literature, English Language, or a related subject (2:2 or above preferred). 
  • A strong passion for education, literature, and language development. 
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills. 
  • A patient, enthusiastic, and adaptable approach to supporting students of different abilities.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a school setting.
  • Previous experience working with young people (e.g., tutoring, mentoring, classroom support) is desirable but not essential.

 

Salary & Benefits:

  • Weekly pay between £419.25 - £500, depending on experience and responsibilities.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
