Job Description: Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant

Location: Kettering Area
Position: SEN Teaching Assistant
Start Date: As soon as possible
Contract Type: Full-Time
Working Hours: 8:30 am - 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday

About the Role: We are seeking a dedicated and experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to join our team in the Kettering area. The successful candidate will work closely with autistic and non-verbal children, providing 1:1 support to meet their individual educational and developmental needs. This role offers a rewarding opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of children with special educational needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide tailored 1:1 support to autistic and non-verbal children, assisting them with their learning and communication needs.
  • Implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and behavior support plans (BSPs) under the guidance of the SENCO and class teacher.
  • Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment where children feel safe, valued, and encouraged to participate.
  • Use a range of communication strategies and assistive technologies to facilitate communication and interaction for non-verbal children.
  • Support children with sensory processing difficulties, implementing sensory interventions and accommodations as required.
  • Assist with personal care and hygiene tasks, ensuring the comfort and dignity of each child.
  • Collaborate effectively with the class teacher, SENCO, and other professionals to deliver a cohesive and coordinated approach to support.
  • Monitor and record the progress and achievements of children, providing regular feedback to the SENCO and class teacher.
  • Implement behavior management strategies and de-escalation techniques to support children in managing their emotions and behaviors.
  • Attend training sessions and professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills in supporting children with special educational needs.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Previous experience working in primary schools, SEN schools, or similar educational settings.
  • Experience working 1:1 with children with special educational needs, particularly autistic and non-verbal children.
  • Understanding of autism spectrum disorders and other special educational needs, including communication difficulties.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with children, parents, and colleagues, demonstrating empathy, patience, and understanding.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and non-verbal, to effectively support children with diverse needs.
  • Relevant qualifications or training in special educational needs, such as a Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (desirable).
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, adhering to school policies and procedures at all times.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
