Job description

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Teaching Assistant to join our inclusive and supportive team. The successful candidate will provide tailored support to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ensuring they thrive academically, socially, and emotionally within a safe and encouraging learning environment. Some students may have associated difficulties such as sensory impairments, communication difficulties or present challenging behaviour.

As a Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with class teachers, special educational needs coordinators (SENCO), and other specialists to implement personalised learning strategies that promote independence and success for students with autism.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one and group support to students with Autism, helping them engage with lessons and develop key skills.
  • Assist in the planning and delivery of tailored learning activities, adapting resources as needed.
  • Help students to manage their behaviour, emotions, and social interactions through positive reinforcement and sensory strategies.
  • Promote communication skills, using verbal and non-verbal techniques, including the use of visual aids, Makaton, or PECS where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with teachers, SENCO, and external professionals to monitor and review student progress, providing feedback and suggesting adjustments to learning plans.
  • Support students in managing transitions between activities and in building routines that enhance learning.
  • Ensure the learning environment is structured and supportive, adapting materials and spaces to reduce anxiety and sensory overload.
  • Assist with personal care tasks when required, while promoting independence in daily activities.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with children, preferably those with Autism or special educational needs.
  • A patient, empathetic, and flexible approach to working with students.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, parents, and specialists.
  • Comfortable with personal care which can include full support with toileting
  • An understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.

This is a full time position to start ASAP. We can also consider applications from those looking to start in January 2025.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
