Job description
A fully inclusive comprehensive secondary school in York is seeking a permanent Autism Support Lead to work within their pastoral team.
The Autism Support Lead will work closely with the SENCO and senior staff to support students with Autism. The role focuses on coordinating Autism provision within the school, implementing and monitoring interventions, and ensuring students have access to both academic and emotional support.
Key Details:
- Full-time, permanent role.
- 32.5 hours per week.
- Salary: Grade 5, SCP 11 - 15 (FTE £25,979 - £28,770)
Key Responsibilities:
Curriculum Support:
- Develop and implement Individual Learning Support Plans to support students with Autism.
- Deliver tailored interventions, including 1:1 sessions and group work.
- Coordinate with external agencies (e.g., CAMHS, SASS) and provide evidence for EHCP applications.
- Maintain records of interventions, monitor progress, and adjust strategies based on student outcomes.
- Run ASD tutor groups and write risk assessments for students with ASD/SEMH needs.
- Promote positive behaviour, engagement, and emotional well-being through structured activities.
Qualifications & Experience:
Essential:
- Relevant experience working with children (ages 11-16) with Autism in an educational setting.
- Minimum Level 3 qualification in relevant education, childcare, or support fields.
- Proficiency in literacy and numeracy (3 GCSE passes at Grade C or above).
- Completion of ASC qualification or training and knowledge of child development and SEND frameworks.
- Makaton and or BSL knowledge.
Skills & Attributes:
- Strong organisational skills, ability to manage multiple projects and work collaboratively with staff and students.
- Effective communication and record-keeping.
- Ability to promote positive behaviour and well-being in students.
- Knowledge of SEND legislation and frameworks, and capacity to handle a dynamic, sometimes challenging, environment.
Working Environment:
- The role involves physical activity, such as supporting students during lessons and managing classroom setups.
- The mentor will be required to work both in and outside the classroom in various weather conditions, when supervising students.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
