SEMH Teaching Assistant
Job description
Are you passionate about supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)? Do you have experience working with pupils who have Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? Teaching Personnel is currently recruiting for a 1:1 SEMH Teaching Assistant to support a primary school student on a full-time, temporary basis. Although this role is temporary, registration with Teaching Personnel will mean you have access to further opportunities in the future, if desired.
About the Role:
As a SEMH 1:1 Teaching Assistant, you will be working closely with a student to support their emotional, social, and academic development. You’ll be helping them to build confidence, engage with learning, and manage their emotions within the classroom setting. This is a vital role that requires patience, empathy, and the ability to use positive reinforcement strategies to encourage positive behavior.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide 1:1 support to a primary school student with SEMH needs
- Assist with managing challenging behavior and emotional outbursts
- Support the student in accessing the curriculum and engaging in classroom activities
- Work closely with the class teacher and SENCO to create a positive, structured learning environment
- Promote social skills, emotional regulation, and overall well-being
- Assist with tasks such as preparing resources, taking notes, and supervising during breaks or lunchtime
What We’re Looking For:
- Experience working with children with SEMH or other SEND needs (preferred)
- A patient, calm, and empathetic approach to supporting students
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents
- A proactive attitude and the ability to work independently
- Previous experience as a teaching assistant or in a similar role is desirable, but not essential
- A relevant qualification in childcare, education, or SEN support (e.g. Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant qualification, or equivalent) is preferred but not mandatory

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
