Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health)
Location: Walsall
Contract Type: Full-time / Part-time 

About the Role:

Are you passionate about supporting young people with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) challenges? We are seeking a compassionate and enthusiastic SEMH Teaching Assistant to join our dedicated team, helping students overcome barriers to learning and thrive both academically and personally.

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students who may experience behavioral, emotional, and mental health difficulties. You will collaborate with teachers, mental health professionals, and parents to provide individualized support that enables students to engage fully in the classroom and develop positive coping strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one or group support to students with SEMH needs, helping them access the curriculum.
  • Assist teachers in managing classroom behavior and creating a supportive learning environment.
  • Implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and behavior management strategies in collaboration with teaching staff.
  • Support students in developing social skills, emotional regulation, and resilience.
  • Help students to manage anxiety, anger, or other emotional challenges, enabling them to remain engaged in their learning.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, providing a stable and supportive presence.
  • Work with external professionals, such as counselors and therapists, to ensure students' mental health needs are addressed.
  • Provide regular feedback to teachers, SENCOs (Special Educational Needs Coordinators), and parents on students' progress and well-being.

Requirements:

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs, ideally within an educational setting.
  • Understanding of SEMH conditions and how they affect students' learning and behavior.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with students and staff.
  • Patience, empathy, and resilience in working with students who may present challenging behaviors.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team and maintain a flexible approach.
  • Relevant qualifications in education, psychology, mental health, or a related field (desirable but not essential).
