Job description

Do you have an interest in helping young people with their mental health and well-being? We are looking for a caring and dedicated Mental Health Support Assistant to support students in the Portsmouth area.


Teaching Personnel work closely with schools in Portsmouth who are focused on creating a safe, supportive, and positive environment for all students. Mental health is just as important as academic success, and we’re looking for someone to ensure that every child feels supported, valued, and confident. If you’re someone who genuinely cares about young people’s mental health, we’d love to hear from you!

What You’ll Do:

  • Provide one-on-one and small group support to students dealing with emotional or mental health challenges.
  • Work closely with teachers and the pastoral team to identify students who need extra help.
  • Help run activities and interventions that promote mental well-being and resilience.
  • Create a positive and welcoming environment where students feel safe and valued. 
  • Support students dealing with stress, anxiety, or other emotional difficulties.
  • Work with outside professionals and agencies to make sure students get the help they need.
  • Keep confidential records about student progress and well-being.
  • Be a trusted adult students can turn to when they need help.
  • Adhere to and uphold safeguarding policies and procedures at all times. 

What We’re Looking For:

  • Previous experience working with young people in a mental health or support role.
  • A good understanding of mental health challenges in children and young people.
  • Great communication skills and the ability to connect with students.
  • Compassionate, patient, and approachable attitude.
  • Team player who is also happy to take initiative when needed.
  • A relevant qualification in mental health, psychology, or a related field is great, but not essential.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
