Job description

Teaching Assistant – KS2

An opportunity has arisen in a GOOD primary school in Darwen to take up a Teaching Assistant position to begin from January 2025. The successful candidate will need to apply through Teaching Personnel and will be expected to have the following pre-requisites in order to be considered:

Level 2 or above Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent (Degrees accepted).

Recent school-based experience working in a KS2 department.

Good command of written and spoken English.

Ability to build relationships with pupils, parents and the staff in school.

Maths and English GCSE- C grade minimum.

References from recent education settings.

The Head teacher in school is very likeable and holds a good reputation in the local area following a recent successful Ofsted inspection grading. She was appointed as the Head of school in the last two years and has since moved her attention into improving behaviour and attendance. She has coupled this with a number of solid appointments to her staffing team which has impacted well on the teaching and learning aspect of the school day. As a new Head teacher who stills plans and delivers a number of lessons across the working week, the said Head teacher can be sympathetic and supportive as she is still well and truly involved in the delivery of the curriculum.

The role advertised will begin from January 2025. The working hours will amount to 30 each week, 6 hours per day. You will be located in the Year 3 and possibly the Year 5 class throughout the week; you will be expected to work with small groups delivering Maths and English as well as supporting individual children with additional needs and lower learning capacity. You will work closely with the class teacher to also assess the children each lesson to ensure they are making the expected progress. As the children in school arrive from a variety of social backgrounds, the Head teacher is keen to appoint an individual who can manage behaviour using a range of strategies, mainly centred around positive reinforcement. There are always opportunities for temporary roles in school to continue on to school contracts and so it is in the best interest of the Head teacher to appoint a candidate who can potentially step up and continue to grow in school.

As the majority of the support work will take place in the Year 3 class, a good understanding of phonics, spelling & grammar as well as mental and written strategies for mathematical calculations are expected. You must therefore have a sound knowledge of the Year 3 learning objectives. As the children are also making the transition from Infants to Juniors you will have to be nurtured in your approach as some of the children will struggle to work independently.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQ’s on the Teaching Personnel website for details.
All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
Teaching Personnel is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. We undertake safeguarding checks on all workers in accordance with DfE statutory guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ this may also include an online search as part of our due diligence on shortlisted applicants.
We offer all our registered candidates FREE child protection and prevent duty training. All candidates must undertake or have undertaken a valid enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Full assistance provided.
